Overall objectives of the GROUP research activities


Annotation of genomes in silico and development of tools for the analysis of sequences

 

• Implementation of gene prediction methods in genomes from different organisms and identification of new genes with specific characteristics among the annotated genes.

• Implementation and development of new algorithms based on automatic learning methods for the predictions of structural and functional characteristics of proteins starting from their sequence.

• Development of automatic tools for 3D structure prediction starting from the protein sequence both of globular and membrane proteins.

 


Methods and technological platforms for the construction, maintenance and analysis of genomic and proteomic databases

• Construction of a surface patch database

• Structural and functional protein annotation

 

Protein surface database

• Implementation of the database through the massive input of data on interaction drawn from the main scientific journals and through the development of automatic or semi -automatic text-mining tools for a quick extraction of information.

• Development of a new database structure allowing the processing of information not only on interaction but also on the different functional relationships between interacting proteins.


• Management of information and development of a graphic interface for the description of cellular pathways.

 

Database of predicted protein structures

• Collection of the best predicted residues with predictors based on different methods, validated by CASP (Critical Assessment of Techniques for Protein Structure Prediction) and mapped on verified structures

• These residues will be used to implement a method based on machine learning to quickly validate the predicted structures.


• 3D Repository of membrane proteins executed with different methods

• 4 servers dual P3 1.0GHz 1 GB RAM
• 5 workstations p4 2.6GHz 512MB RAM

• 4 servers dual p3 500MHz 512MB RAM

The biprocessor servers are also connected in cluster mode to be exploited for possibile high performance parallel computing demands.
