Laboratory of Bioinformatics II  Rita Casadio

Course aims: Providing expertise on the selection and/or development and application of tools useful to address important problems of Modern Biology and to verify students' capability in autonomously handling a research project. At the end students will acquire know-how concerning: - Cost/Benefit analysis of the project- scientific evaluation of the workflow of the research project - development and implementation of the workflow with all the necessary steps - the evaluation of all the possible risks of failure and success probability - the application of selected bioinformatics tools for the project outcomes - the development of the required software if necessary - the analysis of the results in terms of their exportability to a wet lab - how to draw conclusions in terms of benefits vs. putative costs and obtained results. Exploitation of the results in terms of their application.
Course contents: Choice of a project, Search for the state of the art literature and critical reading, Cost/Benefit analysis, Application of the putative results, Discussion of putative solutions, Development of the project workflow, Writing a paper on the selected topic and its solution within a bioinformatic framework according to a given journal (Bioinformatics). How to write an application grant.
Readings/Bibliography: Selection of a bibliography pertinent with the state of the art of the selected topic. Refrence: PubMed.
Teaching methods: lectures, practicum
Assessment methods: Presentation of a paper ready to be submitted, Oral discussion of final results, their validation and exploitation in relation to the state of art in the field.
Teaching tools: PC, Internet, PubMed.
