20th Bologna Winter School
Data Science for Bioinformatics

Technological advancements are promoting a shifting of paradigm in Life sciences: low cost and high-throughput data generation is leading Biology towards the Big Data era. The possibility of collecting voluminous datasets offers unprecedented opportunities to increase the basic biological knowledge and to maximize the impact on applied sciences, including Precision Medicine, Drug Design, and Biotechnology for new agricultural or industrial processes and products. This scenario raises new challenges for Bioinformatics: it is necessary to build new infrastructures and tools to store massive datasets, to make them accessible and interoperable. Moreover, new algorithms are required to analyze and integrate in a manageable time data from different sources, in order to extract biologically relevant information. In this context, unsupervised and supervised machine-learning paradigms, including Deep learning algorithms, are emerging as effective tools able to extract correlations and to recover information hidden in the mass of heterogeneous data.

The 20th edition of the Bologna Winter School will present the state-of-the-art of the available Bionformatics algorithms and Cloud-based strategies for collecting and storing and processing data out of large-scale experiments (including genomics, transcriptomics, epigenomics, microbiomics).

How to get to Il Caffè della Corte:
From the train station take the public bus, #27 or #25, and get off at the first stop after the Due Torri. The entrance to Corte Isolani is located at #19 on Strada Maggiore.

From the Due Torri, the two towers at Piazza della Mercanzia, follow along Via Santo Stefano. The entrance to Corte Isolani is located at #18 along this street.

From the highway we recommend driving towards the center of Bologna and leaving the car in a parking area along the viali, which is the street that circles the perimeter of the historic downtown. Traffic is limited in the downtown area and allows only those vehicles with proper permits to drive inside the historic area.
